Rockley Brahmans has long been known for high level, consistent breeding and handling practices that deliver superior herd bulls. We expect to replenish our herd bull numbers in 2016 with the view to reclaiming our position as market leader for supplying high numbers of elite herd bulls. Read more on our commitment to both quality and quantity, our targets for 2017 and beyond, and how we have achieved such a quick turnaround.
Chris and I realised that in order to achieve our goal of once more breeding large numbers of quality herd bulls, we needed to purchase breeders. It wasn’t easy to source breeder cattle of the quality that we required, but we have been delighted with our purchase over a 2-year period of 6 decks of dark pigmented Grey Brahman breeders from Brett & Jane Kinnon & Family of Bungoona Brahmans at Clermont.
These cattle are now the nucleus of our new elite herd bull breeding operation. The Bungoona females have been crossed with solid Red Brahman bulls we have purchased. These include NCC Essex ($50,000) and Yoman 77/0 ($32,000) to ensure our new-look herd bulls produce superior progeny. Daughters of the Bungoona females are now in full production, which will give us an extra boost to our herd bull numbers.
In terms of quantity, we will have 90 quality herd bulls available for sale in 2016. In 2017, we expect to offer close to 150, well on the way to our long-term goal of producing 200 elite herd bulls each year. We are equally committed to quality, and maintain strict criteria for selection using our 7 elite breeding attributes. Our aim is to meet and exceed the exceptional and now benchmarked standard that Rockley is known for, and that is reflected in strong interest shown by existing and new clients in our herd bulls.
