We are already looking forward to the Big Country sale on the 5th of February, 2018. In my next few articles, we share the genetic background of the sires and donors of the animals we will be presenting there. To help your purchasing decisions, we also highlight consistent traits we see in their progeny. All our breeding and matching decisions reflect our experience and thoughtful commitment to Rockley’s 7 elite breeding attributes.
DOONSIDE MR C EAGLE (IVF) (P)
A real apex male, Eagle has taken us to a whole new level in our polled breeding program. He’s a standout phenotypically with tremendous length of body, muscle expression, eye appeal, beautiful balance, bone, scale, natural softness and sire appeal. A disposition second to none and loaded with character.
Backed by the fast-rising industry red sires, ABBA Sire of The Year and a Doonside donor who is a super functional cow with generations of a perfect udder and loads of milk. Both sides are filled with history, hierarchy and hallmark cattle from across the globe.
Eagle’s BREEDPLAN figures indicate he is a high-growth bull for 200, 400, 600-day weights, which we believe to be correct. His Scrotal Size (SS) EBV is above breed average at +0.9 and his Days to Calving (DTC) EBV is -0.3. At 30-months his raw data delivery was 1038kg, 12/10mm with an EMA of 132.
KENROL MR HJ RAY 0366 (AI) (ET) (S)
A polled son of the imported bull Mr 3H X-Ray and out of an excellent dark red polled donor female who has an excellent udder. He is a high-growth bull that displays tremendous length, bone and docility along with a tidy underline and beautiful coat type. His figures for Days to Calving (DTC) are impressive at -6.2, well below breed average. ‘HJ’ is also in the top 10% for Retail Yield.
HJ’s progeny are true to his type, exceptionally quiet, strong over the top line, structurally sound, having ample breed character and a high percentage are polled. We have a tremendous line of daughters by HJ that we are excited to join.
Kenrol Brahman Stud sold a son at Rockhampton Brahman Week Sale (RBWS) 2016 who fetched $34,000.
YOMAN 77/0 (H)
Yoman is a $32,000 purchase from the 2012 Rockhampton Brahman Week. Elevated, trim, muscular, beautifully pigmented, loaded with character, sirey and with superb length, he’s a rich blend of both worlds – red and grey, old and new, including a direct line to the original importations.
Many of the most successful herds of the past and present are included in his genetics: Cumberland Downs, Lancefield, Burnside, Lyndhurst, Tartrus, JDH, HK, HCC and Cherokee.
The Yoman 77/0 progeny are consistently breeding true to his type. They are quiet in nature, have terrific strong heads and exhibit ample breed character. Our first two Yoman sons met the market strongly at RBWS 2016, and we continue to be impressed with his females’ udders.
GLENGARRY I’M A GANGSTA 2291 (D)
An impressive blue pigmented sire that was retained by the Glengarry stud. We were particularly drawn to this bull for his structural correctness, large scrotal, strong head and tidy underline. His dam has produced 10 progeny to date and was an impressive female phenotypically when we saw her. His sire Glengarry Sub Zero is doing a tremendous job, and produced a $52,500 son at RBWS in 2017.
We spotted ‘Gangsta’ before he attended Beef 2015 where he had a success, placing 4th in his class. Testament to his breeding strength, all four bull progeny we have had from him thus far will be at Big Country 2018.
NCC DIPLOMAT 1689 (AI) (ET) (D)
A $40,000 purchase from the 2011 NCC Sale. Diplomat’s sheer strength, carcass attributes and carriage put him in a class of his own. A powerful straight red with an international pedigree, he represents one of the first reds by international and US national champion, JDH Mr Elmo Manso.
Diplomat has a strong body and is a real sire type out of the leading full blood South African donor NCC Dienka 238 (AI)(ET)(H). Dienka has placed an impressive genetic stamp on the breed with sons in leading herds across Australia.
Our first Rockley Diplomat son sold for $24,000 and the first progeny out of a Diplomat daughter sold for $12,000. We have many amazing daughters coming in to our production system, with tremendous progeny resulting from these females. We are rapt with the udders on the Diplomat daughters, along with their capacity to maintain the do-ability we require from a lactating female.
Diplomat’s BREEDPLAN figures indicate he is in the top 10% for both Eye Muscle Area and Retail Yield.
Next week, we’ll showcase the dams of the bulls we’ll be presenting for sale at Big Country 2018. Please stay tuned…
